And so comes the time for joy back in the North, Christmas time into hearts of all men.
The candles, the strings of gold shine from the trees in the smallest of houses again.
But there from the rafter a cage hangs until my companion's voice and her heart have gone still.
And so ends the wailing of those locked away. What sorrows have passed? Now there's none who can say.

Cypresses stay fragrant throughout winter here, where I sit by the tallest of trees.
The wine sparkles red and the waters are blue. The wind, ever warm, whispers peace.
And far in the haze the mount of Etna revealed. Her clouds on my memories, I feel almost healed.
The songs and the laughter echo in the shade. For awhile I forget the old life I mislaid.

Oh brightest of stars, let your light shine upon Finlandia beyond the seas and the years.
And let your last rays bring these blessings to home, and twinkle on snow and my tears.
There's no place on earth that I would rather be. Nor heaven or waters that I'd so long to see.
And Sylvia, my dear, let your voice sing with grace. Sing for us both now, lost from our time and place.
