Natalie Lucie - The Man

Once upon a time there was a young man
A boy with big dreams and no real plan
He said "I'm gonna live my life this way:
I'll figuring out how to make playing pay.
Cos all that I need is a shirt on my back
A song in my heart, and I'm on the right track..
I'l'l compose and write til the morning light,
Yeah, I'll sleep all day and I'll sing all night."

But his father said, "Oh no...no no.
This isn't how your story goes.
We've such big dreams for you to grow,
So you know, you need to let this go."

So the boy took his dreams out from his heart
Made invisible cages for all his art
He found a steady job that filled up his time
He learned how to sell and forgot how to rhyme
And he started to feel like a star
Driving around in his fancy car
He found a good girl that he made his wife
Yeah, I guess you could say he really won at life.
But he started drinking everyday
And he began to push his friends away
Trying to ignore the pain that was growing inside
Full of all the ideas he was trying to hide
And one day he stumbled into a bar
And saw a girl singing with her guitar
Tears rolled down when he saw her play
Cos he realised what he'd thrown away...

And he screamed..."Oh no...no no...
This wasn't how my life was supposed to go!
I had such big dreams for my soul to grow
And I never should have let them go..."

Some ten years later he was listening to
Old music on the radio and whistling tunes
When his son cam in with a bright red face
And said "Dad, I just won another race!
And I think I'm gonna be an Olympian,
Cos all I really want to do is run."
And the The Man knew he needed to rationalise
And give his naive son some real advice...

So he said, "Well, son, you know..
We get to choose wherever our lives go,
Whatever you invest in will always grow
And your dreams you should never let go, no.
You dreams you should never let go
Promise me, you'll never let them go."
